St. Stephen’s Church, Richmond, Melbourne 1998
(With the co-operation of Rev. Ian Brown)
These minimal paintings, low lying boxes, attenuated pillars and leaning serial forms, overlaid with photographic references, flashes of light and veils of shadow, have been inserted into the space of St Stephen’s Church in Richmond, Melbourne. Hanging, freestanding or leaning throughout the building, like scattered signs or multi-vocal resonances in Baroque music, they create contradictions within the architecture that extend beyond the walls to the city beyond, provoking a different kind of mapping of this space through which the viewer must navigate.
